Symbian^4 makes video debut, fails to wow
Maybe it’s the lack of a banging soundtrack , but we’re finding ourselves somewhat underwhelmed by these first video appearances by the highly anticipated Symbian^4 user interface. What we’re shown is a now familiar layout for touchscreen devices, with a trio of home screens that can be customized with widgets and live information...

Samsung responds to Symbian claims, says it’s still supporting it
Contrary to popular belief (and reports from yesterday ), it seems that Samsung actually isn’t planning to ditch Symbian anytime soon — or at least it’s not prepared to tell the public. Shortly after announcing its own Bada OS , rumors began to fly that Symbian support would fade in the near future; according to a company representative...

Gartner: Symbian is ‘re-arranging the deck chairs,’ losing buoyancy fast
We all know that Symbian is still holding down the fort as the globe’s most widely used mobile OS, but anyone interested in criticizing it nowadays will have to get into a queue . Nick Jones from Gartner is latest to launch a broadside against the apparently complacent market leader, opining that its user experience has been surpassed by...

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIV: Zoho’s E72 is made in China, has Finland doing a double-take
Having trouble getting your hands on that Nokia E72 ? Perhaps you favor a handset with a TV tuner? Zoho’s KIRF E72 features the aforementioned tuner, dual sim, QWERTY keypad, WiFi, JAVA, FM tuner, and both rear and front-facing 1.3MP cameras. Rest assured, the UI looks nothing like what you’d get with from Finland. But did we mention...

Celio’s Redfly smartphone dock gets real enough for a demo reel
You know, it’s sort of crazy to look back at what companies did and didn’t survive the Great Recession of 2009. Ugobe , Veoh, SGI , TZero and Circuit City all folded within the last year, yet Celio — of all firms — is still alive and well kicking. If you’ll recall, we spotted a ” proof of concept ” smartphone...

Sharp microchip enables dual-screen smartphones, e-readers and netbooks
Judging by the fact that our lovely planet is home to the Libretto W100 , the Kno , Onkyo DX and oodles of prototypes that utilize twin panels rather than a panel and a keyboard, Sharp’s newest microchip is likely to draw some serious industry attention. Improving on an idea that began in 2008, the company has recently shown off a new chip...

BlackBerry Magnum prototype spotted, canned in favor of something better?
Okay, before we get too far here, keep your excitement in check: you’ll apparently never be able to buy this. The good news, though, is that CrackBerry seems to have it on authority that the phone you’re looking at here — an early Magnum prototype — has been scrapped in favor of something better, the “Dakota,”...

Leica X1 photo gallery proves that big shots do come in little packages
For those who’ve never really understood the mystique and allure surrounding Leica ’s retro-styled cameras (and their stratospheric price tags), here’s a gallery of shots that might just lend a little insight into the fixation. The outfit’s X1 was announced back in September, though initial shipments aren’t expected...

Nokia delays Symbian^3, investors not impressed
As in any business, in the world of the smartphone there are winners and there are losers. Earlier this week Apple blew away market expectations and posted a $3 billion profit thanks largely to increased popularity of the iPhone. For the competition news is not so good, and while Nokia did manage to boost earnings per share 40 percent this year,...
