Anyhow, we caught wind last month of a possible entry in the form of the so-called “Vision,” but we didn’t have any visuals — just a user agent profile that may or may not amount to anything. Well, that seems to be changing today with a couple blurry shots out of a Croatian site that allegedly shows the goods featuring a 3.7-inch display, a 1GHz processor (Snapdragon, we assume), and Android 2.1 with Sense (the launcher looks …

Motorola mini Droid slider caught by Mr. Blurrycam
Okay, this one’s a complete and very welcome surprise — some extremely blurry pictures and a quick video of what appears to be a smaller Motorola portrait QWERTY Android slider for Verizon just popped up on the Chinese Hiapk forums — and yes, it’s got the glowing red Droid eye. We’re not sure if that means the Droid...

Toshiba AC100 Android smartbook hits the United Kingdom
Hey, there little guy! That’s the Toshiba AC100 — an Android 2.1 smartbook with Toshiba’s custom user interface — on show in the UK, where you can now grab one up. The 10.1-inch, 1.9-pounder has yet to show its face anywhere near the US, but as for specs it’s got a 1GHz Tegra 250 SoC, a 32GB SSD, 512MB of DDR2 memory,...

ZTE’s Smooth Android slider is a not-so-smooth Pre knockoff
We hate to yell “Pre!” at the top of our lungs here, since we’d really like to see further exploration of the portrait QWERTY form factor for Android, but it’s hard to avoid the form factor and stylistic comparisons. The new “Smooth” phone from ZTE is a low-end handset running Android 1.6, with a 2.8-inch QVGA...

Stats show Motorola Droid is the new elephant in the Android room
Remember back in the day when the West was still wild, the gold rush was still in full effect, you owned whatever land you could manage to fence off, and tycoons were being made and broken on a daily basis? No? Well, some of you whippersnappers might be too young to recall it, but trust us, it happened — and it seems like that’s the...

Firefox now available for Android 2.0 and above, still at pre-alpha stage
Fennec , Mozilla’s codeword for mobile Firefox builds, has just made its pre-alpha debut on Android. The tastefully named Vladimir Vukićević informs us that it’s pretty much a debug release, with unoptimized memory utilization and some quirks rebooting the app when it’s started and when add-ons are installed, but it is at a...

Gartner and IDC agree: the Android invasion’s accelerating around the world
Last quarter we reported on some pretty stellar growth numbers for Android in the global smartphone marketplace. Back then, Google’s OS had a 9.6 percent slice of the pie, but today that’s ballooned to a robust 17.2 percent, meaning that in terms of end-user sales over the last three months, Android has nearly matched RIM’s BlackBerry...

Dell Mini 3iX shown off in Brazil, works on tan, leaves Android Market in the dust?
Hey, Dell: looking for the absolute quickest way to screw up your first entry into the dog-eat-dog smartphone industry? Well, removing the Market app from your Android load is a solid way to start. Yeah, you heard that right — according to Brazilian site Zumo, the all-important Android Market was nowhere to be found on the Mini 3iX it had...

Firefox for Mobile (Fennec) escapes in a rough Android port
It’s slow, jerky, and may not even work on your Android device even after installing the 41MB package. But it’s FireFox for Mobile (aka, Fennec ) on Android, brother, and isn’t that worth the hassle? Based on our experience with it on the N900 , the only gold platform at the moment, it most definintely is. MartinSchirr of Android...

Xperia X1 and Android 2.0.1 joined in unholy matrimony
Tired of waiting for the Xperia X10 for your first taste of Android and Sony Ericsson ? Leave it to the gang at the XDA-developers forum to jump the gun. Last week marked the successful port of Android 2.0.1 (or Android 1.6, if you so choose) to the Xperia X1 . No bluetooth, camera, or GPS — not yet, at any rate — but WiFI, GSM, resistive...

Archos 5 gets Android Market, Gmail and Maps for that Google-blessed experience
Since it’s not a phone and transgresses in all sorts of other Google-pleasing areas, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn’t had a full shot at Android thus far, being relegated to merely the open source aspects of the OS. However, with phones like the Droid out and about and making high-resolution compatibility a must for Android developers,...
