Samsung ST5500 WiFi camera hits the FCC
Samsung’s fast making a name for itself as a company that throws more than the basics into into its point-and-shoots, and it looks to be continuing the trend with its new ST5500 camera, which just recently cleared the FCC. Judging from the specs, this one certainly looks to have things covered on the picture-taking front, with it packing...

iPad roundup: New York Times and others get HTML5 video, iPad app store, and more
The momentum towards HTML5 and away from (or at least in parallel with) Flash seems to be accelerating with today’s launch of the free Brightcove Experience framework for HTML5 — a “way to publish, distribute, and monetize web video for the iPad and other Apple devices” according to the Brightcove press release. While Brightcove...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 reviewed: as good as ‘a loaf of plain white bread’
It’s hard to imagine complaining about a stylish compact camera that packs a stabilized 28-128mm zoom range and does 720p video capture at 30fps, but Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-FP8 didn’t garner any raves from the crew at PhotographyBLOG either. Image quality was found to be decent in well-lit conditions and no more than ISO 800 —...

Switched On: Why it’s time for an iTunes TV subscription
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. In the 10 billionth song that Apple sold through iTunes, Johnny Cash’s “Guess Things Happen That Way”, a man other than Steve Jobs famous for black attire bemoans the happenstance of his romantic misfortune. But nothing could be further from the...

CBS testing HTML5 iPad video out in the open, sorry Flash
Hey Dan, ever heard of a staging area to do your testing? Apparently not judging by the screenshot above. MacRumors took that “iPad – test – dan config – 3″ content from the CBS.com homepage for a spin and discovered what appears to be HTML5 ( not Flash ) video. A bit more sleuthing reveals several “webkit”...

Switched On: The two sides of 3DTV
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Without a doubt, 3D was the keystone feature touted by every major TV and Blu-ray player manufacturer at CES 2010. But the 3D technology we’ll see this year asks more of consumers than previous reinventions. As with HD, they will need new TVs, new video sources,...

Nikon DSLR triplets on the horizon?
It’s been quite some time, relatively speaking, since Nikon’s updated its DSLR lineup. Not that we’re complaining about the D3S or D300s (pictured), mind you, but our eyes are perennially fixated on staring into the next big thing. Nikon Rumors seems to think it’s got a handle on three new photo-snappers in the pipeline....
