We’ve seen this done badly so many time that it’s hard to imagine anyone so self serious as Apple taking a crack at it (even if they’ve already done so in the desktop space ), but for whatever reason the company picked up this 3D UI patent back in 2008 under the guise of a few French employees. The patent was just released in December, and describes in some detail a method of zooming around in 3D using multitouch. Of course, this picture seems to imply that it’s for jumping through some representative icons on a 3D plane, but the patent seems more concerned…

Never say the USPTO doesn’t have impeccable timing: on the eve of Apple’s tablet launch (and on the very day we finally realized that we’ve been looking at the same set of Apple patent images in loosely-related filings since 2004), the Patent Office has granted Apple some 13 patents, including #7,653,883 for a proximity-sensing...

It may still be quite a ways from realizing its ambitious Morph concept , but it looks like Nokia has been toying around with the idea of flexible displays as of late, as evidenced by a just-published patent application (first filed back in 2008). Covering a “user interface, device and method for a physically flexible device,” the...

Mama always said that some folks just never learn , and we reckon there’s plenty of wisdom to be had from that very statement. Year after year , German police are called in to raid select booths at CeBIT ( and IFA , to be fair), and yet again we’ve seen a booth cleared out at the request of powerful lawyers from a few companies you...

Southwest Airlines may not own a plane with a headrest infotainment system, but it’s still far and away the most enjoyable commercial flight you’ll find in the US of A (save for Virgin America , naturally). Granted, we’d like to see in-flight WiFi offered on a few more of its flights (read: 100 percent of them), but hey, we’ll...

Speedy browser aside , the Archos 5 Internet Tablet started as the runt of the Android litter, but the ugly duckling is headed towards swanhood — while officially , it’s still stuck with Android 1.6 , the tablet’s French manufacturer has just transformed the media machine into what looks like a stellar Android game system as...

Not like it matters much now — after all, Project Natal has had time to incubate and come out as Kinect — but those wondering about the inner workings of the motion sensing system now have more one outlet to investigate. A patent application filed on February 23, 2009 was just made public today, describing a “gesture keyboarding”...

It’s been awhile since we heard anything from Sensitive Objects , the French firm that developed Anywhere Multitouch, the platform that uses piezoelectric sensors to extend touch sensitivity beyond the display to the entire device. Well, we thought it was a pretty sweet idea — and apparently Motorola did as well. According some spicy...

Remember NTP ? The tiny company with a portfolio of patents on wireless email technology that wrung a $612 million settlement out of RIM in 2006 after years of litigation? Well, get ready to fall in love all over again, because the company just sued Apple, Google, Microsoft, HTC, LG, and Motorola for the same thing. Given the company’s protracted...

So it’s real, and… it’s a trackpad. What seemed like it might have been pure rumor and some good Photoshopping just a short while ago has magically (ha ha!) transformed into reality. If you’re wondering what the Magic Trackpad is like to use — get ready for a shock. It feels just like using a slightly larger version...

Chances are we’re missing something incredibly awesome being said in this foreign-language video, but we can probably guess what Mobile-review Sergey Kuzmin is saying: “I’ve got the Sony Ericsson Aspen and you don’t. Life is grand.” Okay, so maybe we’re a little jealous, but at least he was kind enough to give...
