Baby simulator surfaces in Japan, Devo wants its mascot back (video)

December 18th, 2009 admin

When we first saw Yotaro baby simulator we thought: “we’ve seen this ugly robot before.” And no, weren’t thinking about Keiko , the robot patient currently seeing action in teaching hospitals in Japan. It just so happens that robot in question has more than a passing resemblance to Booji Boy, a character beloved to Devo fans world-wide. The robot, developed at the University of Tsukuba, is designed to teach people about childcare and parenting by portraying various facial expressions, movements, and physiological traits…

RoboCup Japan Open underway in Osaka, mechanical soccer still pretty boring (video)
They can be adapted to a wide range of human activities — spying, killing, and assembling automobiles, to name but a few — but as the various RoboCup competitions remind us time and again, our soccer fields are safe from robot encroachment for the time being. The above specimen, a joint venture by researchers at Osaka University and...

Quasi robot melts hearts at Toy Fair, Interbots promises toy version soon
You’d have to be heartless to walk by Interbots’ Quasi and not crack a smile. Q, as we like to call him, isn’t an autonomous bot, but instead everything from his facial expressions to his speech are controlled wirelessly via a tablet PC. As you can see in the video after the break, his master can change his eye color and arm...

World Wide Web creator sorry for the ‘//’ and other things that don’t matter
Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with creating the World Wide Web , recently said that his only real regret about the whole shebang is forcing people to type out the (essentially unnecessary) double slash before the ‘http’ in URLs. Speaking at a symposium on the future of technology, he noted (in reference to the dreaded marks) the...

MIT’s MeBot makes telerobotics fun again
We know how you feel. Sure, telerobotics has changed your life for the better, allowing to interact with people as if you’re really there , coasting through the halls of an institution of higher learning, dropping knowledge on anyone within shouting distance. But something’s missing. You aren’t happy , you aren’t free ....
Giant robo-babies crawl out of your nightmares and into reality (video)
Giant robo-babies crawl out of your nightmares and into reality (video)
We like robots that play soccer , safe wildlife , and clean our stuff . We’re not, however, particularly fond of robots who look like extras in horror movies. Such are M3-Kindy and Noby, a pair of bots recently shown at the JST Erato Asada Project symposium in Japan, both designed to study human development by basically pretending to be...

Those crazy kids at SoftBank are back again with the Mimamori line of remote control robot cameras. Designed to cruise around your living room at a dog’s or cat’s-eye view (and doomed...

Kojiro humanoid goes musculoskeletal in a big way
We just found a new friend. Kojiro, a humanoid being built by the University of Tokyo’s JSK Robotics Laboratory, has a detailed musculoskeletal system built to mimic the human body. It works on a system of artificial bones, muscles and tendons to create a robot that is theoretically more light and agile than your regular bot, and which moves...

HTC Desire HD surfaces on Amazon UK, gets pulled in record time
And this, folks, pretty much seals the deal. If HTC bothers to not ship the Desire HD, it’ll come as quite the surprise. You know — given that we’ve seen leaked specifications , an image from Mr. Blurrycam and even a behind-the-scenes video of it. Now, however, we’ve got a product listing on Amazon’s UK branch to...

The 12.1-inch, 4.72-pound TouchSmart tm2-2050us is currently in pre-order status, rocking a 2.13GHz...

MIT Seaswarm autonomous robots coming soon to an oil spill near you (video)
Think of it as an autonomous, swarming, photovoltaic legion of seagoing Roombas (or don’t, if you’re easily upset). The Seaswarm project at MIT takes a thin, hydrophobic material and drags it behind a robot outfitted with GPS and WiFi for determining its location and communicating within a swarm. When deployed, the group finds the...
